For years people have conveyed the fact that the pen is truly
mightier than the sword. This is of course referring not to the use
of a pen as a reliable tool of battle or a means of squirting your
opponent in the eye but to the power that words hold over everyone
and everything. When carefully constructed, words can declare war
and peace, change someone's views on life or even offer us washing
instructions. Needless to say the impact of words has increased as
a result of ever climbing global communications technology and
where the pen was once mightier than the sword, the keyboard today
could be compared to the might of an atomic bomb.
So if words are our weapons then writing is our battle strategy.
I believe the ability to write well can be applied to any form. As
a songwriter I have spent countless hours thinking about how
combinations of words can convey messages, influence feelings and
express opinions all the while entertaining the listener. However I
have come to realize in recent years that creativity is not
restrained to any one medium and words will retain their power
under any circumstance. If you can write a song or a story then
chances are you can write an advert or a promotional campaign.
There is really very little difference in the goals of either
endeavor. You want to pass on a message but in a manner of which
the receiver will find enjoyable. The question is if song lyrics
are carried by music, what carries our marketing text? The answer
could relate to the overall layout and design of the campaign but
if I'm totally honest, the best thing about such a process is that
there is no need for music (except maybe in jingles) and as a
result the message receives all of the attention, so better make it
a good one. Write well and your messages will be all the music to
the ears that the client needs.
So I would advise anyone looking to pursue a creative role in
marketing or any other area to stay open to different concepts, be
it song/poetry writing, film making or any other creative pastime
because the basic premise will always be the same.
